2021 Chevy Traverse: Refreshed, Changes, Release

Chevrolet is working on its full-size, truck-based models which will debut for the 2021 model year as the all-new versions but the unibody 2021 Chevy Traverse will also get attention. The current, second-generation Traverse was launched for the 2018 model year and after three model years on the roads, the 2021 version should get the mid-cycle update.

The recently caught prototype version of the full-size Chevy Traverse promises usual mid-cycle updates with the focus on the front and rear fascias. The cabin should benefit from the upgraded tech features and new material options. Chevy should also expand the availability of active safety systems.

On the other hand, there are no many details what Chevy has in mind for the powering options. The current Traverse is available with the V-6 engine only while reports indicate that refreshed Traverse could come with the GM’s new turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

2021 Chevy Traverse: Design

Judging by the spy photos, the 2021 Chevy Traverse will appear with more aggressive styling and like it is the case with most mid-cycle updates the bulk of changes will be on the front and rear fascias. The profile of the model, hood and roofline will continue in the same form.

As for the changes on the front end, it seems that Chevy used the latest Blazer SUV as an inspiration and that is good news. The result of the facelift should be more aggressive and sportier front-end styling.

The model should appear with the new headlight setup with the to-tier design as on the striking Chevy Blazer. The slim, LED signature lighting should take a place upper on the front fascia while in the lower section should be projection beams. The model should also appear with the new fog lights which feature a new design and sit higher than before.

Chevy also made some revisions on the design of the grille and front bumper while the hood and profile continue with the same contours and creases.

The rear also comes with the reworked bumper and new taillights. The tailgate seems also slightly reshaped.

Interior, equipment:

Chevy hasn’t revealed what will be changed inside the cabin of the next Traverse but there shouldn’t be many novelties. Chevy upgraded infotainment system and navigation for the current version and also added more features to the options packages. The 2021 version will likely add new material options and few new features. Chevy should also make advanced safety systems more accessible than in the current version.

Every Traverse will come with Apple Car Play and Android Auto integration, Wi-Fi, a rear-view camera, etc. The base-level version will also use cloth upholstery and 18-inch wheels.

The mid-grade models will get an upgraded infotainment system and upholstery, improved cooling system, etc. The leather upholstery, unique exterior and interior treatment, ventilated front seats, wireless charging and more will be reserved for the top trims.

2021 Chevy Traverse: Powertrains

At the performance level, the current Chevy Traverse comes at dealers with a V-6 engine only. Chevy discontinued a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit after the 2019 model year.

As for the 2021 Chevy Traverse, the model should again offer a 3.6-liter V-6 making 310 hp and torque of 266 pound-feet. The engine will likely stay in the combination with the 9-speed automatic transmission. Buyers will have to choose between the front- and all-wheel drive in almost all trims.

However, there is a possibility that Chevy returns a turbocharged engine to the equipment list. A likely candidate is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which makes 237 hp and torque of 258 lb-ft under the hood of the latest Cadillac XT4.

There are no signs that a turbodiesel unit will appear for the new model year but we shouldn’t exclude this option. Still, Chevy axed the diesel unit from the Chevy Equinox’s equipment list due to low demand.

2021 Chevy Traverse: Release, Price

The refreshed 2021 Chevy Traverse will go on sale in the last quarter of 2020. It’s still too early to know the price of the updated model but there should not be radical price variations. The current Traverse starts from $35, 695.

The Traverse is the brand’s competitor in the segment where are models like the Honda Pilot, VW Atlas, Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder, etc.
