2021 Ford Expedition: Changes, Hybrid, Price

The full-size, truck-based SUVs are occupying the headlines lately and that should continue through 2020 and 2021. Chevy presented the all-new Tahoe and Suburban recently and both models are larger, more sophisticated and will be available with the diesel option. However, Ford should also give some attention to its truck-based SUVs for the 2021 model year. We know that redesigned, best-selling Ford F-150 should come as the 2021 version but the 2021 Ford Expedition SUV which shares the platform with the current generation half-ton Ford is expended to get some important upgrades as well.

The Expedition entered the fourth generation for the 2018 model year while the 2021 version should benefit from the mid-cycle update. Details about possible upgrades are scarce but several reports indicate what should be changed on the new version. As part of Ford’s intention to electrify most of its models, the next Expedition could also get a hybrid powertrain. The same is expected with the next Lincoln Navigator. Ford will also launch the all-electric Ford F-150 but the hybrid model should also appear. Reports suggest that a hybrid version of the next Expedition will prioritize performance and towing over efficiency.

The next Expiation should also come with tweaked exterior and interior design. The model will also get an upgraded tech and safety features.

2021 Ford Expedition: Design

The next 2021 Ford Expedition will continue to the new model year with the same aluminum-intensive construction shared with the 13th generation Ford F-150. However, there should be some changes to the front- and rear-end styling plus new color and wheel options.

The new Expedition should come with a slightly modified grille and headlights while the profile will continue in the same form. The rear should also receive tweaked headlights and rear bumper.

The hybrid version is also expected and it should be almost identical to the gas-powered model from the visual perspective. The model will just get unique badging and wheels compared to other versions.

Interior, Equipment:

The cabin of the next Expedition will also stay mostly unchanged. Buyers should expect new material options and details in some trims and upgraded tech and safety features. The model should get an upgraded infotainment system and a larger touchscreen option.

The Expedition will again be well-equipped from the entry-level version. The base Expedition will ride on 18-inch wheels and come equipped with the power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, an 8-inch touchscreen interface, satellite radio, six speakers and more. Additional packages will be available to equip the base version with more premium features including active-safety equipment. Available will be adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic high beams, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

Upper grades will boost material quality and add more comfort and upgraded tech features. The model will offer surround-view cameras, rear-seat entertainment, leather upholstery, improved noise insulation, parking assist, heated and ventilated seats, etc.

The Expectation will also provide plenty of space for passengers and their cargo. The standard version will offer up to 104.6 cubic feet of the cargo space while the long-wheelbase version will increase it to 121.5 cubes.

2021 Ford Expedition: Powertrains

Ford hasn’t also commented on what it has in mind for the 2021 Ford Expedition regarding the powering options.

What is sure the next Expedition will repeat the 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 engine which is good for 375 hp and torque of 470 lb-ft. The engine will come in a pair with a smooth 10-speed automatic transmission. This combination will provide smooth acceleration and massive towing capability. The Expedition with this engine under the hood can tow up to 9, 300 ponds. Ford will also offer an FX4 off-road package for those who want improved traction control and capability.

As for the hybrid version, reports indicate that Ford will prioritize performance and towing over efficiency. It’s not clear yet what gas-power engine Ford will use and what output will be of the hybrid version. The Expedition might use the current 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine in the combination with an electric motor to gain massive power and torque. In a similar application, the Lincoln Aviator plug-in hybrid gets 493 hp and torque of 630 lb-ft from the 3.0-liter bi-turbo V-6 engine and electric motor. In contrast, the new Explorer Hybrid uses a non-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 mixed with the electric unit for the net output of 318 hp.

What is also possible, the next Expedition could follow the path of the all-new Tahoe and Suburban and add the diesel option sourced from the light-duty F-150.

2021 Ford Expedition: Release, Price

The next 2021 Ford Expedition should appear in late 2020 with slightly increased price across the trim range.
