Jeep is working intensively on its SUV range and we saw several redesigned models recently including also the Wrangler-based truck. The famous brand is also prepping the new generation Grand Cherokee and thanks to the spy phots and leaked details we have some insight into model’s design and features. But Jeep also announced the return of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer nameplates and two models could appear for the 2021 model year to go against other full-size, luxury SUVs.
Although the new Grad Cherokee should grow in size and offer three-row configuration, Jeep lacks the model with the comfortable third row and massive cargo capacity. The large, three-row SUVs have improved their standings on the market recently and the arrival of the redesigned General Motors’ SUVs should also increase the sales. With the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, Jeep will also get the piece of this growing market.
Based on what we know so far and what we expect, the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer should share the platform with the newest Ram 1500 as well as some of its powertrains. Jeep promised also the plug-in hybrid version for two new large SUVs. The models should also equip the brand’s newest tech and safety systems offering loads of premium comfort features as well.
2021 Jeep Wagoneer: Design
The new, full-size 2021 Jeep Wagoneer and larger Grand Wagoneer will be the new truck-based SUVs alternative to premium models such as the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Infiniti QX80. The Wagoneer is believed to be the Jeep’s rival for mentioned models with the standard wheel-base while the Gran Wagoner should go against the extended wheelbase versions.
As for the platform, the Wagoneer should use the lightweight architecture of the newest generation, light-duty Ram 1500 pickup truck. The prototype version with Ram 1500’s body was spotted recently on the road but an independent rear suspension suggests that Jeep is testing new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. The independent rear suspension will provide more comfort in the rear-most row and better ride quality than that would be the case with the live rear axle.
While the Jeep Grand Cherokee was caught recently in the prototype from which suggest evolutionary styling changes, the Wagoner hasn’t yet been spotted with the production body. However, everybody believes that new Wagoneers will also share similar styling theme as the popular mid-sizer. Suggesting a similar outcome is also Jeep’s teaser image and Yuntu Concept from the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show.
So, the new Wagoneer is expected with the new version of the brand’s signature seven-slot grille and new, thin headlights similar to the units from the mentioned concept. The model should also come with the sleek front and rear bumpers and squared-off fender flares. The rear should also borrow styling cues from the Yuntu Concept model.
There are no many datils about the interior of the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs yet. What is sure the models will use high-quality materials and offer all kind of comfort features. The third-row will also provide enough room for adults and there will also be high-volume cargo capacity.
The new Wagoneer will also come with modern dash design and buyers will have a chance to choose between different screen sizes and to opt for the digital instrument cluster. There will likely be 7- and 8.4- and 10.1-inch touchscreen options.
The model will also come with active safety systems starting from the base version.
2021 Jeep Wagoneer: Powertrains
Jeep hasn’t also talked about the powertrain options that will be available with the new 2021 Jeep Wagoneer. There should, however, be the V-6 and V-8 units, mild-hybrid system, possibly diesel unit and plug-in hybrid as well.
The base engine is expected to be a ubiquitous 3.6-liter V-6. The Wagoneer should also employ the 5.7-liter HEMI and 6.4-liter V-8 units. Some sources suggest also a 717-hp V-8 powered Trackhawk version. The model could also offer a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6. The mild-hybrid system is also expected to be mixed with some engines.
Jeep promised also the plug-in hybrid version which should appear later in the lifecycle. It’s not clear yet what PHEV setup the model would use. Will it be some form of the plug-in hybrid setup installed in the Chrysler Pacifica minivan or all-new configuration?
