Mercedes redesigned its largest GLS SUV for the 2020 model year and made a premiere at the 2019 New York Auto Show. Benz’s newest GLS version is rival to models like the BMW X7, Lincoln Navigator, Lexus LS and Cadillac Escalade. The newest GLS rides on the longer chassis and has a more aerodynamically shaped body. The newest iteration of the model is also roomier and quieter inside and loaded with the new tech features including MBUX infotainment platform. The power comes from the inline-6 and V-8 engines combined with Merc’s EQ Boost technology.

The third-generation Mercedes GLS arrived initially in two variants, inline-6 powered GLS 450 and V-8 powered GLS 580. Both versions are assisted by the 48-mild hybrid system. However, there will also be hotter AMG-branded GLS versions and the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 was caught testing. Mercedes is allegedly working on the GLS 53 version while there could also be the GLS73 at some point.

The hot AMG GLS 63 should pack 600+ hp under the hood combined with sportier appearance and AMG-specific details. The GLS 63 should arrive in early 2020 and could be marketed as the 2020 model as well.

Interior, equipment:

The GLS-Class is designed to maximize interior comfort and cargo capacity. The model comes with standard seven-seat setup and uses high-quality materials in every version. The newest generation GLS incorporates also the new MUBUX infotainment system which consists of two 12.3-inch touchscreens placed under the glass panel. One display manages instrument panel’s functions and one is for the infotainment purposes.

The AMG GLS 63 will also use the brand’s newest tech and comfort features and add several AMG-signature touches. There will be sportier seat variants as well as the steering wheel. The dash and other surfaces will also apply unique trim accents and there will also be appropriate logos.

The third-generation GLS-Class debuted in two variants with unique powertrains. The GLS 450 gets 362 horsepower and torque of 369 pound-feet from the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine. Buyers can upgrade to GLS 580 version with the 4.0-liter turbo V-8 engine under the hood. This unit makes 483 hp and peak torque of 516 pound-feet. Both versions get help form the EQ Boost 48-Volt mild-hybrid system. The standard part of the GLS is also the 9-speed automatic transmission, 4Matic all-wheel drive and air suspension.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 should put a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 under the hood. The part of the system will also be a 48-Volt mild-hybrid unit, a remapped 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system. The power will go above 600 hp but we will see how much. The current GLS 63 provides 577 hp from the old 5.5-liter V-8 engine.

The AMG-badged GLS will also get a specially tuned suspension and upgraded braking system.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 is not far from the arrival and could even hit the market as the 2020 model as some sources suggest. The model’s debut should follow after the launch of the regular GLS later this year with the on-sale date in mid-2020. The price of the high-performance GLS-Class should start around $130, 000.
