The mid-size Mercedes-Benz GLE arrived all-new for the 2020 season and it continues to be one of the top-rated SUVs on the roads. However, as it is commonly the case with Mercedes, the brand introduces the high-performance versions for the second model year after the redesign. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE version brings the heat to the lineup with the new AMG-branded model. The top-shelf AMG GLE 63 S joins the lineup with the mighty 603-hp 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine under the hood. Naturally, the model gets also AMG’s chassis and suspension tuning and it is also visually distinguished from other versions with the AMG-branded styling cues.

The mid-size Mercedes GLE gets top scores for the roomy and attractive cabin. The model has also probably the best in the industry infotainment system. The GLE comes also equipped with modern safety equipment and there are plenty of niceties and luxuries at disposal as well. The mid-size Merc SUV comes also with strong engines and backed up by impressive handling.   

The Mercedes GLE is positioned in the high-stake class alongside the Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport BMW X5 and X6.

Coming on the scene after the last year’s thorough redesign, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE retains the same styling of the already available versions.

The model has a strong presence and it mixes rugged touches and sophistication. The new AMG GLE 63 S version builds on the regular model design with the bold AMG bits. The new high-performance GLE comes on the standard 21-inch wheels that can be replaced with the larger 22-inch units.

The model grabs also attention with the AMG’s bold, vertical-slat grille and enlarged lower section intakes.

The rear section uses a quad exhaust setup and there is also a prominent rear diffuser.

Buyers can also opt for the AMG Night Package that boosts the model’s strong presence further with the gloss black trim and black-chrome exhaust setup.

Interior:

The cabin of the Mercedes GLE radiates with the sophistication and exceptional craftsmanship.

The model is quite roomy and there is plenty of leg and headroom in the second row. The cargo capacity is also large slightly above 80 cubic feet behind the first row.  

The GLE has also intuitive controls and attractive trim patterns.

The new AMG version reconfigures the regular version’s in-cab design with the specific three-spoke steering wheel, carbon fiber trim, stainless steel pedals and AMG-branded sports seats. The model goes also on sale with the AMG-specific control panel.

Equipment:

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE comes also with the long list of standard equipment. The model gets LED headlights, a sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, power mirrors, hands-free tailgate, automatic wipers, simulated leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and more by default. Every version goes also on sale with the MBUX infotainment system, a 12.3-inch main touchscreen, navigation, HD radio, etc.

At the safety level, the model relies on standard forward collision warning and mitigation, a drowsy driver monitor, blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert.

Optional equipment includes powered second-row seats, ambient lighting, satellite radio, Burmester sound system, etc. There is also an optional safety package with systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, active lane change assist, etc.

The upper grades switch to the leather upholstery, heated steering wheel and rear seats, premium sound system and more.

The new AMG version packs most of the optional features by default mixed with multi-contour seats, AMG-specific themes, 64-color ambient lighting and more.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE: Performance

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE returns with the same powertrains setup in the currently available versions.

The base GLE relies on a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine mixed with the smooth 9-speed automatic transmission. The model can be had with the rear- and all-wheel drive. The engine makes 255 hp and torque of 273 lb-ft.

The GLE 450 is the all-wheel drive by default and equipped with the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. The engine is good for 362 hp and torque of 369 lb-ft. There is also a 48-volt hybrid system that adds 21 hp.

The GLE 580 4Matic mixes the EQ Boost system with a 4.0-liter turbo V-8 engine. The V-8 unit delivers 483 hp and torque of 516 lb-ft.

The new AMG GLE 63 S joins a 48-volt electrical system with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine good for 603 hp and torque of 627 lb-ft. The model uses a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system with a locking differential. It employs also four-corner air suspension and there are seven driving modes.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE: Release, Price

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE will go on sale in the coming months. The price starts at around $54,000. The new AMG model demands $114, 945.
