2021 Nissan Paladin: Rumors, Design, Release

The SUVs have become a dominating force in the automotive industry and a number of available models in various shapes and sizes continue to grow. The brands have diverse purpose models on the offer but they continue to expand it further. Lately, the truck-based and off-road-ready SUVs entered the industry focus especially in the US where General Motors launched several all-new, truck-based models and several are to come soon such as the Ford Bronco and others. However, the reports indicate that the markets outside the US have also an appetite for the truck-based, off-road-capable models and Nissan should reportedly return the Paladin nameplate on some markets. The model could reach the market as the 2021 Nissan Paladin.

Nissan confirmed the arrival of the redesigned, mid-size Frontier pickup truck in the US next year while it markets the current-generation version with the new V-6 engine and transmission. However, the rumors are circulating that the new-generation Frontier could open the room for the all-new, off-road-ready Xterra model as well. The second-generation Xterra was discontinued in 2015 in the US while continued to be available in some markets a bit longer. In China and other markets, the version of this model was marketed as the Paladin. Nissan introduced Paladin’s replacement called Terra in China at the 2018 Auto China and this model is also available in regions such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, etc. The rumors are circulating that the new Paladin could appear in new markets as the updated and rebadged Terra model. Nissan hasn’t commented on these rumors.

2021 Nissan Paladin: Design

The mid-size Terra SUV available in the mentioned markets is based on the global D23 Navara pickup truck and takes a position between the X-Trail and Patrol in the brand’s global SUV lineup. It is the brand’s alternative to the models such as the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, etc.

If rumors about the arrival of the new 2021 Nissan Paladin turn out to be true, the model should be the updated and rebadged Terra version, not an all-new model. The new-generation Navara pickup truck is a few years far from the introduction and it will come on the new Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance platform and available with the electrified powertrain.

The Paladin should appear in the new markets with slightly tweaked front and rear styling and updated cabin compared to the current Terra SUV. The model will have the same footprint as the Terra model which measures 192.2 inches in length, 72.8 inches in width and rides on the 112.2-inch wheelbase in China.

The model should get a tweaked V-motion grille and headlights including also revised taillights. The profile should remain the same as on the Terra defined by the dynamic character line.

Interior, Equipment:

The cabin of the new 2021 Nissan Paladin should be familiar form if the model reaches new markets. The design would be similar to that of the current Navara pickup and Terra SUV. There should be the third row with a decent amount of legroom and headroom as well as cargo capacity.

The new Paladin should also appear with the comfortable Zero Gravity seats and modern tech features. There will also be premium comfort features but not in large quantities. The model will get a modern infotainment system with incorporated Apple Car Play and Android Auto and there should also be several active safety systems.

2021 Nissan Paladin: Powertrains

While the newest Nissan Frontier pickup truck is available with the all-new 310-hp 3.8-liter V-6 engine and 9-speed automatic transmission which will also be the part of the next-generation version and eventually the all-new Xterra in the US, the 2021 Nissan Paladin should share engine options with the global Navara truck and Terra SUV.

Depending on the market, the Terra SUV goes on sale with various engine options. The model can be had with the 180-hp 2.5-liter inline-4 petrol engine and two turbodiesel units. The diesel options include a 2.3-liter and 2.5-liter twin-turbo units making 188 hp. The model is available with both two- and all-wheel drive. The engines come in the combination with the 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmissions.

2021 Nissan Paladin: Release, Price

Nissan hasn’t announced the arrival of the 2021 Nissan Paladin and it hasn’t also commented on the rumors. The rumors are no specific about the model’s price and in what markets outside Terra’s availability, the Paladin-badged version would appear. The reports indicate its arrival late this year.
