The popular VW Tiguan entered the second generation for the 2018 model year and arrived much longer to the US while buyers in Europe prioritize smaller dimensions and sporty ride. The model added additional standard equipment including automatic emergency braking for the 2020 version. For the next model year, the model will be halfway through the generation cycle and the 2021 VW Tiguan should arrive in the facelifted form.
The refreshed Tiguan should appear with slight styling updates in the US while the European version should also get a performance Tiguan R version. The reports indicate also partial electrification of the powertrain range. The refreshed version should bring new color options as well as enhanced upholstery and trim. The part of the mid-update will also be an upgraded infotainment system.
The next-generation Tiguan:
On the other hand, some details already appeared about the next-generation Tiguan. The redesigned Tiguan should come with radical changes especially the way it looks. The radically new styling will be combined with a new interior which should adopt similar treatment as updated Passat. The new cabin should come with larger screens and fewer physical controls.
The next-generation Tiguan is also expected to ride on the updated version of the current MQB platform. The model should also gain the new, eco-friendly mild-hybrid powertrains. The plug-in hybrid is also expected.
2021 VW Tiguan: Design
The prototype version of the 2021 VW Tiguan doesn’t suggest notable styling changes for the mid-cycle update. The model looks pretty much the same as the current version. Some sources suggested that refreshed Tiguan could adopt a more imposing grille version and headlights inspired by those on the updated Passat. The taillights should also get revised design and VW is also expected to offer new color options and wheel styles.
The short-wheelbase Tiguan sold in Europe should also get the performance Tiguan R version. Buyers in the US won’t get the sportier long-wheelbase Tiguan. The Tiguan R version should appear with more aggrieve front and rear fascias and quad exhaust setup. Like the T-Roc R, the Tiguan R is also expected to come with tweaked chassis, lowered suspension and larger brakes.
Interior, Equipment:
The cabin of the refreshed Tiguan is reported to come with the enhanced trims and upholstery. For the new model year, the popular Tiguan should also gain an upgraded infotainment system with higher contrast screens and updated software. The base version should also be marketed with a larger touchscreen.
The Tiguan will again provide three rows of seat but while the first two rows will be spacious and with the good seats the third row be cramped. The model will also bring up to 73,5 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
Buyers will also have a long-range of trims options to choose from. The model will start with cloth upholstery and upgrade to leather padding in top trims. The base equipment will also include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. In the upper grades will also appear digital instrument cluster, Fender sound system, surround-view parking system, heated steering wheel and more.
2021 VW Tiguan: Performance
Powering the 2021 VW Tiguan in the US should again be a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with the 8-speed automatic transmission. In the current form, this engine makes 184 hp and torque of 221 pound-feet. The revised engine version could get a slight performance upgrade. There will be two- and all-wheel-drive configurations. The fuel economy should remain 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway with the front-wheel drive.
The Euro-spec Tiguan should get revised engine range and according to some sources could also introduce the mild-hybrid support. The Tiguan R version is also expected to appear on the Old Continent with the 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 engine coupled with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The power should be above 300 hp. The R version will also come with tweaked chassis and suspension plus larger brakes.
2021 VW Tiguan: Release, Price
The refreshed 2021 VW Tiguan will appear in mid-2020. The price should see just small corrections. The current version starts from around $25, 000.
The performance Tiguan R model is reported to come in 2021. The redesigned Tiguan R with radical styling changes and upgraded interior and chassis is expected in 2022.
