2022 Mazda CX-5: Redesign, Changes

Mazda builds some of the finest and well-rounded crossover SUVs in the industry. The compact-sized Mazda CX-5 is one of the brand’s most important vehicles. It is a rival for mega-sellers such as the Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Forester and Ford Escape. The model was all-new for the 2017 model year and some sources claim the new-generation version should be the 2022 Mazda CX-5 possibly marketed under a new CX-50 nomenclature.

As available info suggests the new-generation Mazda CX-5 might go on sale under the CX-50 nomenclature as Mazda filed a trademark for this nameplate. Mazda launched recently the CX-30 model and should use this new nomenclature for the rest of its crossover SUV range in their new generations.

The new Mazda CX-50 should adopt an all-new platform that will also be the base of the new iteration Mazda6. The new platform should provide multiple benefits for the new version including support for the SkyActive G and D engine as well as SkyActive-X units mixed with the mild-hybrid system.

Alongside a new platform, the redesigned Mazda CX-5 shroud also adopt more modern and dynamic styling with coupe-like cues. The cabin should also get an upmarket treatment and up-to-date technologies.

2022 Mazda CX-5: Platform, Design

Some details already leaked about the all-new 2022 Mazda CX-5 suggesting that the version should switch the new platform. The model is said to share the platform with the next-generation Mazda 6. The new platform is a rear-wheel-drive based design with a longitudinal engine layout. Implementation of the new platform should provide multiple benefits for the model including reduced weight and improved performance but also the addition of new technologies and powertrain solutions.

On the other hand, it’s not known yet whether the new model would grow in size but we expect some size corrections to improve cargo and passenger capacity.

From the visual perspective, reports indicate that model should adopt more dynamic and coupe-like styling cues.  The model is expected with more dynamic body lines and modernized grille style and headlight design. The model should also adopt some cues from the CX-30 model such as a steeply slanted front and rear pillars for a more coupe-style appearance.

Interior, Equipment:

There are no many details about the in-cab design of the redesigned 2022 Mazda CX-5. The new model should adopt higher quality materials and new technologies. The next version should also improve cargo capacity and rear-seat comfort. The current version has a bit smaller cargo area than most rivals. 

The new-generation CX-5 will also come with the upgraded infotainment system and with a standard package of active safety systems. The actual CX-5 is available with 7- and 8-inch touchscreen options but the next iteration version should follow modern trends and offer a larger option in the upper grades. The redesigned model will also get a new digital instrument panel.

2022 Mazda CX-5: Powertrains

The addition of the new platform will allows the all-new 2022 Mazda CX-5 induction of the new powertrain solutions including the new SkyActive-X inline-6 engine and mild-hybrid setup in addition to other options from the SkyActive family of engines.

The new Mazda CX-50 should be available with the new 3.0-liter SkyActieve-X inline-6 engine assisted by the 48-Volt mild-hybrid system. A 3.3-liter inline-6 SkyActive-D inline-6 diesel unit should also be at disposal in some areas.

The redesigned CX-5 will also come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder SkyActive-G engine and a mild-hybrid system producing around 187 hp. The lower-grade option should also be a 2.5-liter four-cylinder SkyActive-G version capable of producing around 225 hp. The engine range will also include a 2.2-liter four-cylinder SkyActive-D unit.

2022 Mazda CX-5: Release, Price

The new-generation 2022 Mazda CX-5 should have a premiere in late 2021 or early 2022. Mazda is also working on the all-new Mazda6 that will also go on sale as the 2022 model. More details will appear closer to the debut. With more sophisticated cabin and technologies, the new Mazda CX-5 should lift the price closer to $30, 000 mark for its base version. The current model starts from $26, 000.
