2021 BMW X3: Changes, iX3, Specs, Price

The compact-sized X3 and its coupe-like derivative X4 are highly profitable for the Bavarian brand and to keep the good momentum, the next 2021 BMW X3 should appear with a new round of upgrades. The current, third-generation X3 debuted for the 2018 model year and it’s time for the mid-cycle update for the 2021 version.

Details about the upgrades of the regular X3 are still scarce but there should be some styling and interior tweaks that are usual for the mid-cycle update. The next model year should also bring new tech upgrades and revised powertrain range. However, the grand news is an introduction of the all-electric X3 version under the “ i “ sub-brand nomenclature. The new X3 version is a part of the brand’s grand electrification plan and we should see 13 plug-in hybrids and 12 fully electric vehicles from BMW by 2025. BMW has more profitable and premium segments in the focus initially and the iX3 belongs there.

2021 BMW X3: Design

The 2021 BMW X3 should arrive with the refreshed exterior styling as the part of the mid-cycle update. It’s not yet clear what exact changes would be but there should be usual mid-update modifications. The regular X3 is expected with the tweaked grille version and headlights. The front bumper should also see some slight modifications as well as the rear bumper and taillights.

On the other hand, the iX3 prototype reveals some of its secrets. The model seems to have an identical shape and size as the regular X3. The all-electric X3 should, however, appear with the modified bumpers and grille. The grille version should be a specific electric car feature with the BMW’s signature shape but without shutters and airflow needed for the combustion engines. The fully electric X3 should also appear with smoother bumpers for better air efficiency. There will also be unique, lightweight wheels, charging port and appropriate badges.

Interior, equipment:

There are no many details about the interior of the next regular and electric X3 but big changes and differences are not expected.

The next BMW X3 will keep the current interior layout and dash design with some changes in the material options and tech upgrades. The model should get upgraded infotainment features while the iX3 model will also display specific info for the electric cars.

The model will again well be equipped from the base version including standard features such as tri-zone climate control, power front seats, iDrive infotainment system, a power liftgate, simulated leather upholstery, etc. There will also be optional packages with additional comfort and tech features. The iX3 version will get unique materials.

Available will also be the Dynamic handling package, adaptive dampers, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, Harman Kardon sound system, a 10.4-inch touchscreen and much more.

BMW will also equip the next X3 with modern safety equipment including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking and more.

2021 BMW X3: Powertrains

The 2021 BMW X3 will return with the familiar powertrain options but there could be some performance upgrades.

The base BMW X3 will again get the power from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which makes 248 hp and torque of 258 lb-ft. For more dynamic ride a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 unit will be available with the power around 355 hp and torque of 369 lb-ft. All combustion engine-powered X3 models will come with the all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission.

As for the all-electric iX3, the model should employ a new-generation electric motor, transmission and electronics grouped in the one competent. The motor should make around 265 hp fed by the 70kWh battery with a range of around 249 miles. BMW allegedly plans a dual-motor version with the all-wheel drive and combined power around 530 hp.

The fully electric X3 will support 150 kW charging stations which should recover 80 percent of battery’s full capacity in less than half an hour.

2021 BMW X3: Release, Price

The refreshed 2021 BMW X3 is expected in late 2020 while the all-electric X3 could appear in early 2021. The price range of the regular X3 should again start from about $42, 000.

The new, all-electric iX3 will be an alternative to the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-Tron, and Mercedes EQC. The regular X3 challenges the Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC, Cadillac XT5 and Range Rover Evoque.

  • The grille configuration on the 2021 x 3 BMW looks like a bowtie rather than the classic two kidney shapes of past vehicles. Hopefully BMW will not continue this bowtie design which degrades the appearance and front end design aesthetics. The grille also takes on the appearance of a pair of sunglasses. The designer needs to rethink this and get back to BMW tradition. PLEASE !
