Hyundai’s luxury spinoff Genesis joins finally the hot, mid-size segment with the all-new 2021 Genesis GV80 model. The first Genesis-badged SUV comes with either two or three rows of seats equipped with loads of premium comfort and top-notch tech features. Standard active safety tech is also part of the deal while the model gets a notice with the svelte appearance. The cabin gets also premium treatment. The power will come from three turbocharged engines including the diesel unit available on the selected markets.
The first Genesis SUV enters the market where the names such as the Mercedes GLE, BMW X5, Lexus RX and Jaguar F-Pace are found. The model should reach dealers this summer with the base price around $50, 000.
The all-new, three-row 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV is based on the G80 sedan while gets similar styling elements like the recently updated G90 sedan. The model measures 194.7 inches bumper to bumper while sitting on the 116.3-inch long wheelbase. The width is 77.8 inches and it has 67.5 inches in height.
From the visual standpoint, the model gets attention with the large, shield-shaped grille similar to that of the updated G90 sedan. The new quad-headlight design and sporty shaped front bumper are also eye-catchy features.
The upcoming Genesis SUV has also a nicely sculpted hood while a profile is defined by the high-sitting character line. The rear comes also with the horizontally oriented lighting units and sporty rear bumper.
The cabin of the all-new, Genesis-badged SUV has an upscale vibe and comes loaded with premium comfort and tech features from the base version.
The 2021 Genesis GV80 gets a fancy material treatment combined with burled-wood inserts, metal accents and ambient lighting. The uncluttered, horizontally oriented dash comes with a slim 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen sitting on the top of the dash. The main screen can be controlled by hard buttons or controller mounted on the center console.
The GV80’s cabin should also be exceptionally quiet thanks to the new active noise cancelation system designed to reduce engine noise but also wind and road sounds.
At the equipment level, the Genesis GV80 will provide heated and cooled seats in the first two rows while the massaging function should also be available. Available will be Active Motion Driver’s seat with seven air cells to reduce the fatigue of the long drive. Five and seven-seat configurations will be on offer with the rear-most seats adequate for the kids only. The GV80 will also come with the leather upholstery from the base version.
Genesis will also equip its first SUV with the standard package of active safety systems. In addition to 10 airbags, the model will pack standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise with semi-autonomous driving mode. Available will also be blind-spot monitoring, rear automatic braking and driver attention monitor.
On the performance front, the 2021 Genesis GV80 relies on the turbocharged inline-4 and twin-turbo V-6 petrol units. A turbocharged diesel engine will be available on the selected markets.
A 2.5-liter turbo-equipped inline-4 engine should make around 300 hp. A 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 should boost the horsepower rating to 375 units. A diesel-sipping 3.0-liter unit should produce 274 horsepower but won’t come the stateside. Whatever engine is used it will be mixed with the 8-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid powertrain should also appear later in the life cycle.
The Genesis GV80 will also offer a two-wheel drive system and all-wheel drive with electronically controlled limited-slip differential. The GV80 comes with the electronically controlled, adjustable dampers with the cabin-mounted sensors monitoring the road and adjusting suspension.
The 2021 Genesis GV80 should debut in three trims this summer. The base version should cost around $50, 000 while the mid-range Sport version is expected to be available for about $58,000. The range-topping GV80 Ultimate is estimated to cost around $65, 000.
Genesis will reveal more details closer to the model’s market launch including the power figures and what equipment will be available in each trim.
The model will also offer among the best warranty package in the class with up to 10 years or 100, 000 miles.
